The Origin of 'Hello, World!' The first known ‘Hello, World!’ program appeared in a 1974 Bell Laboratories internal memo by Brian Kernighan, documenting a tutorial for the B programming language. It gained widespread popularity through Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie’s 1978 book ‘The C Programming Language,’ where it served as the introductory example. The phrase was
